Outstanding memories of my June, South Dakota & Iowa tour.
1) "Tell me the names again, of the books where you got those stories", asked Brent, who had not taken his eyes from my face as he listened to "Moving
West on Many Trails". Later, he was seen carrying a stack of books out of the Dell Rapids Carnegie Library, including Joan Lowery Nixon's, Orphan Train Adventures.
2) A young girl, in Orange City, IA quipped: "I can stay as long as you have stories to tell." Her response was to my comment that I was "running over" my time but that they wanted to hear another short story before I concluded the session. The
family performance included five children who had attended the early afternoon program, returning to hear more stories.
several of the children later crowded around to show me the books they had checked out. They even introduced me to some new Orphan Train stories!
3) The 120 children that squeezed into a small area of the makeshift Sioux Center, IA library--a community center turned library after their library burned last year. The children were eager to hear "stories" at both performances that day.
4) The many dedicated librarians who made the tour possible and greatly encouraged the children's summer reading.
5) The looks of delight on the faces of both children and adults as we romped through Robert Munsch stories during Pigs, Ponytails and Princesses telling.
6) Seeing the children checking out books after the performances which would enable them to continue building their theaters of the mind that I had helped them create.
7) The seven library--10 performances (two in senior outreach programs in Yankton, SD) tour that validated my reasons for being a storyteller.
8) The beautiful countryside, great roads, charming Bed and Breakfast and a particular Inn that greatly added to our comforts while on the road.
