Prairie Life

"Eat it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or Go without." That was the motto of early settlers living on the prairie in the mid-1800's. Barbara, dressed as a prairie woman, brings "Tillie" to life in your classroom. Tillie, an elderly woman, shares her experiences growing up in Nebraska. Tillie relates the hardships, the fun and the frustrations of farming the land. This is a 30-45 minute program. Add-on: Barbara can work with your class after the program to 1) learn pioneer measuring, 2) learn games children played, 3) make a balance scale or 4) make shadow puppets and perform a short story. Grades 3-6.

The Country's A-growin'!

Civil War Stories: There is more to history than dates and battles. Barbara shares stories that are not usually in the school curriculum. Stories from the Orphan Trains series will encourage the children's interest in the Underground Railroad, the lawlessness of Kansas and a drummer boy's experience in the Civil War. Grades: 3, 4, 5 and 6. A 45-60 minute program.

When Baboda Came to America

Your mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother had this dream: going to America. What was it like to experience a voyage as a young woman immigrant? Why did she choose to travel weeks on a ship in primitive conditions to arrive in a country where she didn't speak the language, didn't know the customs and usually did not know any other person? How did she survive? Join Barbara for this personal story woven into a  presentation about immigrant women of 100 years ago. Grades 4 and up. A 30-45 minute performance.

A Collection of Character Traits

All through history, grandparents and other elders taught values to children through stories. Now who tells these stories? Barbara Kellogg for one-she'll share stories which emphasize respect, patience, appreciation and integrity just to name a few. Some stories are participatory; others are just for good listening. Grades 1-6. A 45 minute story program. Add-on: Barbara will spend time with your students, leading discussions based on the stories told.

A storyteller for over 10 years, she knows how to share laughter and tears with everyone from children to senior citizens in nursing homes, schools, museums, parks and yes, even cornfields!
